Hey Reader,
Welcome to our community! Whether you’re new or a longtime reader, I’m so glad you’re here. Together, we’re redefining what it means to live fully in midlife and beyond—embracing embodiment, empowerment, and body liberation, free from the constraints of diet culture and ageism. All bodies are celebrated here as we build our truly unique community for those in midlife and beyond. Thank you for being part of this journey!
All I know to do right now is to lean toward love and resist hate.
And remind you to care for yourself.
Right now.
Especially now.
So here are 7 things that I want you to be sure to do:
1. Don't forget to eat!
If your thoughts are swirling and you feel anxious, worried, and frightened, you might not be interested in eating. But when your body is undernourished, your brain perceives this as a threat, so your nervous system is much more at risk of dysregulation.
Remember, a nourished body supports a more regulated nervous system and more access to executive functioning. Eating enables you to think straight and return to regulation! (I wrote about this in greater depth in a previous newsletter that is now on my blog if you want more.)
2. Get in your body.
If you want to shift out of post-election swirling thoughts, find a way to connect with your body:
- check in with your senses (name what you can see, smell, taste, hear, feel)
- notice and feel into where your body is making contact with a surface, and let yourself receive the support of the earth beneath you.
- scan your body for places you are bracing and holding tight. Soften and release. ( soften your forehead and around your eyes, drop your tongue from the roof of your mouth, release and wiggle your jaw, drop your shoulders, soften your belly, and any other place you are feeling the grip of tension)
- if it is helpful to you, take a deep inhale directly into your belly and sigh out your exhale, letting go of things you cannot control
3. Unplug from the news cycle.
This may be a good time to take a break from the noise of the news. You can plug back in when you are feeling ready.
4. Soak in art or spiritual practices that are life-affirming.
This is a great time to pull out the books, music, movies, or spiritual texts that remind you of the goodness and humanity in the world. Now is the time to let the light in and remember your values, hopes, and dreams.
5. Stay hydrated.
Try not to neglect caring for your body. Even staying hydrated helps you feel cared for.
6. Rest.
Grief and loss show up as fatigue in the body. Please rest when you can.
7. Reach out.
One of the most important lessons of this election cycle is that we need each other. We need our communities. I've been touched by those who have reached out and checked in. Please reach out and ask for support. We are in this together.
"Remember what you love. Remember what loves you. Remember in this tide of hate what love is. The pain you feel is because of what you love." -Rebecca Solnit
As always, I am so glad you're here!
With love and gratitude,
